College basketball notebook: Huskers hand Hoosiers their third straight loss
Jorge Brian Diaz made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Nebraska the lead, Indiana couldn’t score on its last possession, and the struggling Cornhuskers upset the 11th-ranked Hoosiers 70-69 last night.
Indiana (15-3, 3-4 Big Ten), which lost its third straight game, squandered a 13-point, second-half lead.
Jordan Hulls missed on a driving layup, then recovered the ball and missed a desperation shot from in front of his bench as time ran out.
Bo Spencer led the Huskers (10-8, 2-5) with 23 points. Toney McCray added 11 and Diaz and Dylan Talley 10 each.
Cody Zeller had 18 points and Hulls 12 for Indiana.
Men’s highlights
No. 12 Murray State 66, Morehead State 60 — Isaiah Canaan scored 20 points, and Murray State (19-0, 7-0) won in its toughest Ohio Valley Conference challenge so far this season. Murray State trailed by nine with just under 13 minutes left. Drew Kelly scored 20 for Morehead State (9-11, 3-4).
No. 19 Creighton 66, Missouri State 65 — Gregory Echenique scored 16 and Doug McDermott 15 to help Creighton (17-2, 7-1 Missouri Valley) hold off a stiff challenge from Missouri State (11-9, 4-4). Grant Gibbs scored with 1:06 left to give Creighton a 66-61 lead, and Jarmar Gulley cut it to a point with 56 seconds left.
Wisconsin 77, Northwestern 57 — Jordan Taylor got nine of his 15 points during a 17-2 run early in the second half, hitting three three-pointers in a 1:38 span, to lead Wisconsin (15-4, 4-3 Big Ten). John Shurna scored 19 points and Drew Crawford 17 for Northwestern (12-6, 2-4).
Women’s highlight
No. 1 Baylor 72, Texas Tech 64 — Brittney Griner scored 21 points, and Baylor (18-0, 5-0 Big 12) held off Texas Tech (14-3, 2-3).
The Lady Raiders got as close as 69-63 when Monique Smalls stole the ball from Odyssey Sims in the backcourt and made a layup with 1:12 remaining. Christine Hyde had 15 points for Texas Tech.
