Football: Linebacker prospect flips from Penn State to Ohio State
Ohio State gained a commitment from prized linebacker prospect Camren Williams this afternoon, and the news was disseminated by Twitter.
“It's official, I'm a Buckeye!” Williams tweeted just after 3:30 p.m. “#GoBucks #BuckeyeNation.”
It also means that Williams, from West Roxbury (Memorial Catholic), Mass., is no longer a Penn State pledge. Whether his high-school teammate, cornerback Armani Reeves, also a Penn State commitment, will follow him to OSU remains to be seen. Both were on campus at Ohio State this week for a visit.
Williams, 6 feet 2, 215 pounds, became the third former Penn State-bound prospect to change to the Buckeyes in the past several weeks. Offensive lineman Joey O’Connor of Windsor, Colo., did so earlier this week. Defensive lineman Tommy Schutt of Glenn Ellyn (Glenbard West), Ill., did it in December.
Penn State has been hard-pressed this recruiting season because of the fallout from the child sex-abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, which cost head coach Joe Paterno his job and has brought continued attention.
Ohio State, under the guidance of new coach Urban Meyer, appears to have rebounded smartly from the yearlong NCAA investigation that nonetheless brought a postseason ban for the 2012 season and limits of 82 scholarships (down from 85) for each of the next three school years. The Buckeyes, with six members of the 2012 class already in school and 17 more poised to sign national letters of intent on Feb.1., currently have the third-best recruiting class in the country, according to rivals.com.
That standing will be enhanced by Williams, considered to be the eighth-best inside linebacker prospect in the nation by rivals and the 167th-best overall prospect. He also was a target of Meyer and his staff, who have sought to beef up the linebacker corps in the past few weeks. Linebacker David Perkins of South Bend (Washington), Ind., committed to OSU this week.
