College basketball roundup: Irish limit Lady Vols to fewest points ever
Skylar Diggins matched a season high with 27 points last night and No. 2 Notre Dame routed No. 7 Tennessee 72-44 in South Bend, Ind., holding the Vols to their lowest scoring output ever.
Devereaux Peters had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Irish (20-1), who have won 17 straight. Tennessee (14-5) got 13 points from Meighan Simmons but shot just 27.9 percent.
“That’s a pretty amazing accomplishment against a team of that caliber,” Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said.
The Irish were 0-20 all-time against the Vols before a 73-59 victory in an NCAA Tournament regional final last March in Dayton. Notre Dame hasn’t lost since Nov. 20 to top-ranked Baylor and now has beaten both Connecticut and Tennessee on its home floor this season after beating both in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Tennessee’s leading scorer, Shekinna Stricklen, who missed the previous game because of a sprained knee, returned to the lineup but managed just five points.
Men’s highlight
No. 5 Kansas 64, Texas A&M 54 — Thomas Robinson carried Kansas (17-3, 7-0 Big 12) when things looked bleak, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half. The Jayhawks have won 10 straight games and extended their winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse to 17. Elston Turner had a career-high 24 points for Texas A&M (11-8, 2-5).
