College basketball notebook: Hardaway helps Michigan edge Purdue
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 19 points, and 20th-ranked Michigan defeated Purdue 66-64 last night in West Lafayette, Ind..
Jordan Morgan had 12 points and seven rebounds, Stu Douglass scored 12 points and Evan Smotrycz added 10 points for the Wolverines (16-5, 6-2), who entered the game in a tie for first place in the Big Ten with Ohio State and Michigan State.
Michigan shot 54 percent from the field and outrebounded Purdue 30-23.
Lewis Jackson scored 17 points and Robbie Hummel 16 for the Boilermakers (14-7, 4-4). Hummel missed a three-pointer that could have given the Boilermakers the lead in the final seconds.
Michigan led 65-64 and had the ball in the final minute, but Jackson stole the ball from Morgan. Purdue’s Ryne Smith missed a three-pointer from the right corner but came up with the ball in a scramble. Hummel missed a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Michigan got the rebound. The Wolverines ran the clock down to 3.8 seconds before the Boilermakers fouled Smotrycz. He made the second of two free throws, and Jackson’s heave from near midcourt bounced off the backboard.
Hummel didn’t take a shot for more than 12 minutes at the start of the game, but he got hot at the end of the first half. He scored Purdue’s last seven points before the break to cut the Wolverines’ lead to 30-28.
Men’s highlights
No. 1 Kentucky 57, Georgia 44 — Darius Miller came off the bench to score 19 points and Kentucky (20-1, 6-0) beat Georgia (10-10, 1-5) in the Southeastern Conference.
No. 6 Baylor 77, Oklahoma 65 — Perry Jones III had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Pierre Jackson added 16 points to help Baylor (18-2, 5-2) bounce back after its first two losses of the season and beat Oklahoma (12-7, 2-5) in the Big 12.
The Bears led throughout but needed a strong finish to put away the Sooners, who were within 62-60 in the final five minutes.
Akron 70, Ball State 58 — Quincy Diggs and Brian Walsh scored 16 points each and Akron (13-7, 5-1) beat Ball State (12-6, 4-2) in the Mid-American Conference.
Women’s highlight
No. 11 Rutgers 65, No. 23 DePaul 64 — Khadijah Rushdan’s layup with 1.5 seconds left for Rutgers (17-3, 6-1), who completed a comeback from 16 points down with 10 minutes left against DePaul (15-6, 3-4) in the Big East.
