College hockey: Ohio State winless streak hits 7 games
After being limited to four goals in a four-game stretch, Ohio State scored three times in both games of a series against Ferris State last weekend.
But the sixth-ranked Buckeyes couldn’t carry the offensive mojo over to this week, losing 1-0 last night to Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
The Buckeyes (14-8-4, 10-7-4-1), who are 0-4-3 in their past seven games, remain on top of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with 35 points, but there is a logjam of three teams in second with 33, including the Lakers, with Notre Dame a victory away from joining them. The Irish played at Alaska Fairbanks late last night.
Kyle Haines scored at 4:36 of the first period for Lake Superior State (14-11-4, 9-9-3-3).
Ohio State had a 34-24 edge in shots, including 13-7 in the third period, but could not beat Lakers goaltender Kevin Kapalka.
Ohio State entered with the CCHA’s fourth-best power play at 17.1 percent, but could not convert on its five opportunities with the man advantage.
The two-game series concludes tonight at Taffy Abel Arena.
