Top 25/Big Ten roundup: Denmon’s threes lift Missouri

Marcus Denmon hit three three-pointers in the final 2:05, the last for the go-ahead points, as No. 4 Missouri fought off No. 8 Kansas 74-71 in a Big 12 game last night.

Denmon finished with 29 points, two off his career best, by hitting 6 of 9 three-point attempts.

The go-ahead three came with 56 seconds left for a one-point lead. Michael Dixon added two free throws with 9.8 seconds left, and Kansas’ Elijah Johnson missed badly on a shot to tie the score as time expired.

Missouri (21-2, 8-2) beat Kansas for only the second time in the past 12 meetings, and the Tigers’ impending departure for the Southeastern Conference added spice to the final conference meeting in Columbia, Mo.

Thomas Robinson had 25 points and 13 rebounds for Kansas (18-5, 8-2).

Top 25 highlights

No. 1 Kentucky 86, South Carolina 62 — Top-ranked Kentucky (23-1, 9-0) improved its winning streak to 15 games, easily defeating South Carolina (9-13, 1-7) in a Southeastern Conference game.

Kentucky maintained its hold atop the SEC standings as four players scored in double figures, led by Anthony Davis’ 22 points. Davis added eight rebounds and eight blocked shots.

No. 2 Syracuse 95, St. John’s 70 — Fab Melo scored a career-high 14 points in his return after a three-game academic-related absence and Jim Boeheim tied Dean Smith for third place on the NCAA career victory list with No. 879 as Syracuse (23-1, 10-1) dominated St. John’s (10-13, 4-7) in the Big East.

Syracuse led 41-27 at halftime, and then started the second half with a 16-3 run.

No. 6 Baylor 64, Oklahoma State 60 — Quincy Acy had 11 points and a season-best 12 rebounds, providing the go-ahead basket and a key offensive rebound in the stretch drive for Baylor (20-2, 8-2) in a win over Oklahoma State (11-12, 4-6) in the Big 12.

Perry Jones III added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Pierre Jackson scored 16 as the Bears got their first victory at Gallagher-Iba Arena since 2003, ending an eight-game losing streak.

No. 10 Murray State 65, Tennessee-Martin 58 — Isaiah Canaan, Latreze Mushatt and Jewuan Long each scored 11 points and Murray State (23-0, 11-0) remained the lone undefeated team in Division I, beating Tennessee-Martin (3-22, 0-12) in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Wyoming 68, No. 11 UNLV 66 — Leonard Washington and Francisco Cruz scored 16 points each and Wyoming (18-5, 4-3) upset UNLV (21-4, 5-2) in the Mountain West.

It was Wyoming’s first victory against a Top 25 team since defeating New Mexico in 1996.

No. 12 Florida 73, No. 25 Vanderbilt 65 — Kenny Boynton scored 18 points and Bradley Beal added 16, lifting Florida (19-4, 7-1 SEC) over Vanderbilt (16-7, 5-3) for its seventh consecutive victory.

Notre Dame 76, No. 15 Marquette 59 — Freshman Pat Connaughton had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Notre Dame (15-8, 7-3) made 11 three-pointers to beat Marquette (19-5, 8-3) in the Big East.

No. 21 Florida State 58, No. 16 Virginia 55 — Reserve Okaro White scored 13 points and Xavier Gibson added 10 points for Florida State (16-6, 7-1), which defeated Virginia (17-4, 4-3) for its seventh straight Atlantic Coast Conference victory.

It’s the first time Florida State has won seven straight games in ACC play since joining the league in 1991-92.

Big Ten

No. 20 Indiana 78, Purdue 61 — Victor Oladipo scored a career-high 23 points to help Indiana (18-6, 6-6) defeat Purdue (15-8, 5-5) and break a five-game losing streak to its in-state rival.

Cody Zeller had 16 points and eight rebounds and freshman Remy Abell scored a season-best 13 points for the Hoosiers.

Robbie Hummel had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Purdue.

Iowa 77, Penn State 64 — Matt Gatens scored 18 points as host Iowa (13-11, 5-6) defeated Penn State (10-13, 2-8).

Bryce Cartwright and Aaron White scored 17 each for the Hawkeyes, who won their second straight game.

Tim Frazier scored 23 to lead the Nittany Lions.
