College basketball notebook: Miami upsets Duke

Reggie Johnson got five of his career-high 27 points in overtime, and the University of Miami upset No. 7 Duke 78-74 yesterday.

Kenny Kadji added 15 points for the Hurricanes (14-7, 5-3), who blew a 16-point lead in the second half, then regrouped for their first victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium and just their second over Duke since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Hurricanes are on their first four-game winning streak since 2008 and have won three consecutive ACC road games for the first time.

Seth Curry scored 22 points and freshman Austin Rivers added 20 for the Blue Devils (19-4, 6-2), who missed all six of their free throws in overtime.

Rivers and Ryan Kelly missed three-point attempts in the final seconds for Duke, and Johnson added a free throw with one-tenth of a second remaining.

Men’s highlights

Northwestern 74, Illinois 70 — John Shurna scored 24 points to lead Northwestern (14-8, 4-6) past Illinois (16-7, 5-5) in the Big Ten.

Reggie Hearn added 20 points (7-of-8 shooting) for the Wildcats, who shot 60 percent from the field to win back-to-back Big Ten games for the first time this season.

Brandon Paul scored 22 points and Meyers Leonard had 21 for Illinois.

Minnesota 69, Nebraska 61 — Reserve guard Chip Armelin scored 15 points and Minnesota (17-7, 5-6) took advantage of Nebraska’s poor shooting in the second half to pull away for a Big Ten victory. Nebraska (11-11, 3-8) led 33-32 at halftime, but made just 2 of 16 shots to start the second half and had a stretch of 61/2  minutes without a field goal.

Cleveland State 70, Illinois-Chicago 42 — Jeremy Montgomery made four three-pointers and led four teammates in double figures with 14 points as Cleveland State (20-4, 10-2) defeated Illinois-Chicago (7-16, 3-10) for its fifth straight Horizon League victory.

Youngstown State 80, Loyola of Chicago 63 — Kendrick Perry scored 28 points to lead Youngstown State (13-10, 8-5) over Loyola of Chicago (5-18, 0-13), giving the Penguins their best Horizon League victory total since joining 11 years ago.

Women’s highlights

LSU 61, No. 6 Kentucky 51 — Adrienne Webb got 16 of her 19 points in the second half and LSU (15-8, 5-5) ended Kentucky’s 10-game winning streak in a Southeastern Conference game.

A’dia Mathies got all of her 12 points in the second half for Kentucky (21-3, 10-1).

No. 15 Purdue 77, Illinois 66 — Sam Ostarello scored a career-high 21 points and tied a season-high with 13 rebounds to help Purdue (19-5, 9-2) remain on top of the Big Ten with a victory over Illinois (8-16, 2-9).

 

No. 19 Penn State 68, Minnesota 65 — Mia Nickson had 20 points and Alex Bentley 16, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 38.9 seconds left, to help Penn State (18-5, 8-3) rally for a victory over Minnesota (12-13, 4-7) in the Big Ten.
