Ohio State assistant athletic director Chris Rogers, who has been in charge of Ohio State’s day-to-day football compliance for two years, is leaving to become associate athletic director for compliance at South Carolina.

“I have nothing but good things to say about Ohio State,” Rogers said. “Obviously, we’ve had a tough last year, but we love Ohio State.”

In that last year, Rogers was immersed in dealing with the scandals that resulted in NCAA sanctions, including a bowl ban for the 2012 season. OSU athletic director Gene Smith said Rogers was not responsible for the problems with the school’s compliance.

“I wouldn’t even comment on it because he doesn’t deserve it,” Smith said. “Chris did a marvelous job the entire time he was here. He’s one of the best compliance officers in this country.”

Smith said Rogers’ hiring by South Carolina is evidence of his reputation. South Carolina faces an NCAA Committee on Infractions hearing on Feb. 17-18 in Los Angeles to answer allegations of major violations in its football program.

As difficult as the NCAA investigation of Ohio State was, Rogers said he has learned from it.

“When you’re a compliance person, at the end of the day you have to be able to (point to) this education we’ve done and the procedures we’ve put in place and ask, ‘Have we done everything to the best of our ability?’ ” Rogers said. “I can walk away saying I think we’ve done that.”
