College basketball | Top 25: Duke beats UNC at the wire
Freshman Austin Rivers scored 29 points, including a three-pointer as time expired, and 10th-ranked Duke came back from a 13-point second-half deficit to beat No. 5 North Carolina 85-84 last night in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.
Rivers scored 16 of his points in the second half for visiting Duke (20-4, 7-2), which trailed 82-72 with 2:18 left before scoring on its final six possessions and closing the game with a 13-2 run. The Blue Devils finished with 14 three-pointers.
Tyler Zeller had 23 points and 11 rebounds for North Carolina (20-4, 7-2) but missed a critical free throw late that gave Duke a chance to win on the final possession.
Rivers’ three-pointer — Duke’s third in the final two minutes — helped the Blue Devils earn their fifth win in six tries against North Carolina, which had a chance to earn sole possession of first place in the ACC. Instead, the Tar Heels find themselves in a three-way tie with Duke and Florida State.
Seth Curry had 15 points, Ryan Kelly 13 and Mason Plumlee 10 points and 15 rebounds for Duke, which avoided back-to-back losses.
Harrison Barnes scored 25 points for the Tar Heels, who led 43-40 at the half.
Last night’s highlights
No. 7 Kansas 68, No. 6 Baylor 54 — Jeff Withey scored a career-high 25 points, Tyshawn Taylor added 19 and Kansas (19-5, 9-2) opened the second half with a 23-4 run to blow past Baylor (21-3, 8-3) in the Big 12.
Kansas moved into a first-place tie in the conference with No. 4 Missouri after its second rout of Baylor this season. Thomas Robinson recorded his 17th double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Kansas rebounded from a loss on Saturday at Missouri.
Pierre Jackson scored 16 points for Baylor, which jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first half.
No. 22 Michigan 62, Nebraska 46 — Zack Novak scored 14 points to go over 1,000 for his career at Michigan (18-7, 8-4 Big Ten). The Wolverines outscored the Cornhuskers 15-4 to start the second half and went on to only their second win in six Big Ten road games. Stu Douglass had 13 points and Trey Burke of Northland 12 for Michigan. Bo Spencer scored 13 to lead Nebraska (11-12, 3-9).
Boston College 64, No. 15 Florida State 60 — Jordan Daniels scored a career-high 19 points, including four three-pointers, to lead host Boston College (8-16, 3-7) over Florida State (16-7, 7-2 ACC) and snap the Seminoles’ win streak at seven games.
