College basketball notebook: Murray State falls from unbeaten ranks

Friday February 10, 2012 5:21 AM

Robert Covington scored 17 points and reserve Kenny Moore had 16, including two free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining, and Tennessee State rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to stun ninth-ranked Murray State 71-68 last night.

Murray State (23-1, 11-1), which was the last remaining undefeated team in Division I, had set school and Ohio Valley Conference records for best start to a season, and also saw its 18-game home winning streak end.

“We had an amazing run, 23 wins in a row,” Murray State coach Steve Prohm said. “I’m sure we set a lot of records along the way, but now we’ve got to be totally locked in on winning a conference championship.”

Trailing 48-35 early in the second half, Tennessee State (16-10, 9-4) rallied behind Moore and Patrick Miller, who finished with 12 points. Covington tipped in a missed shot with 41.7 seconds left to increase Tennessee State’s lead to 69-65.

Isaiah Canaan scored 31 points to lead the Racers, but Donte Poole was the only other player in double figures for Murray State with 10, all of which came in the first half.

Tennessee State ended an eight-game losing streak to Murray State and claimed its first regulation victory over the Racers since 1996. The Tigers also clinched their first winning season since 1995-96.
