Men's hockey | W. Michigan 3, Ohio State 2: OSU’s slide continues
The last time the Ohio State men’s hockey team went at least 10 games without a victory, it ended the drought by defeating Western Michigan 3-0 on Nov. 27, 2007.
No such luck against the Broncos last night.
Dane Walters scored 3:20 into overtime, lifting 18th-ranked Western Michigan past No. 15 Ohio State 3-2 in Kalamazoo, Mich., and extending the Buckeyes’ winless streak to 11 games (0-7-4).
OSU (14-11-5, 10-10-5-1, 36 points) dropped into a tie for fifth in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Western Michigan (15-11-5, 12-8-3-3, 42 points) is in second, two points behind Ferris State.
Corey Schneider’s goal 4:21 into the second period tied the score at 1 for Ohio State. Kyle O’Kane’s goal almost 11 minutes later gave Western Michigan a 2-1 lead, but Max McCormick scored on a power play midway through the third to make it 2-2.
OSU goalie Cal Heeter made 34 saves. Frank Slubowski had 23 saves for Western Michigan.
The two-game series concludes tonight. Ohio State has a bye next week before finishing the regular season with a home-and home series against Miami University on Feb. 24-25.
