Ohio State football notebook: Touted Maryland receiver passes on Ohio State
After all the waiting, it turned out that blue-chip receiving prospect Stefon Diggs of Olney, Md., had made his college choice four days ago.
When Diggs finally announced his choice — Maryland — last night at a party/news conference in a sports bar a few blocks from the university’s campus in College Park, he said he had faxed in his signed national letter of intent earlier in the day. He chose the Terrapins over Ohio State, Florida and Auburn.
New Ohio State coach Urban Meyer had made no secret of his desire to add a quick receiver to his first recruiting class, which already includes 25 players. Diggs filled that bill — he caught just 36 passes, but averaged 21.4 yards per catch and scored eight touchdowns in 2011 — which was why four teams kept a spot open for him even nine days after letters of intent could be signed on Feb. 1.
The Terrapins, coming off a 2-10 record in their first season under coach Randy Edsall, became a player for Diggs after they hired offensive coordinator Mike Locksley in December.
Locksley had been fired as New Mexico coach in midseason, but he has gained a reputation as a strong recruiter in the Washington area in his career, including as an assistant for Illinois.
Buffalo on schedule
Ohio State completed its 2013 nonconference schedule by announcing a game on Sept. 21 against Buffalo.
The Mid-American Conference school will receive $1 million for the first meeting between the schools. That season, the Buckeyes will open against Vanderbilt on Aug. 31, Football Championship Series member Florida A&M on Sept. 7 and then play at California on Sept. 14.
Ohio State also announced that it will play Cincinnati on Sept. 8, 2018, in Ohio Stadium, resetting a date that had been set for next season. The schools already have a game scheduled for the 2014 season. Ohio State leads the series 13-2.
Peterson to UAB?
When Ohio State plays Alabama-Birmingham this season, there might be a familiar face on the opposite sideline. John Peterson, who was not retained by Meyer, is said to be in line for the job of tight ends coach under new UAB head coach Garrick McGee.
Dick Tressel, also not retained by Meyer, was hired this past week by Carleton College (Northfield, Minn.) as offensive coordinator. Tressel is the older brother of former coach Jim Tressel.
Before joining his brother at Ohio State in 2001, Dick Tressel had been the longtime coach at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.
