OSU hockey: Buckeyes’ winless streak ends at 11

Alex Carlson scored twice in the third period to help the Ohio State men’s hockey team defeat Western Michigan 4-3 last night in Kalamazoo, Mich., ending the Buckeyes’ winless streak at 11 games.

Carlson tied the score at 3 on a power-play goal at 14:36 of the third. He scored the winner, his third goal of the season, at 16:31 of the third.

Max McCormick and Ryan Dzingel scored on power plays for the Buckeyes in the first period. It was McCormick’s 10th goal of the season and the seventh for Dzingel.

Goaltender Cal Heeter made 21 saves and the Buckeyes (15-11-5, 11-10-5-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) converted 3 of 5 power-play opportunities.

Frank Slubowski stopped 26 shots for Western Michigan (15-12-5, 12-9-3-3).

Women’s hockey

Minnesota (26-4-2, 20-4-2-1 WCHC) scored four second-period goals on the way to a 7-4 victory over Ohio State at the OSU Ice Rink.

Natalie Spooner had two goals and two assists and Ally Tarr tallied two goals.

The Buckeyes (15-13-4, 12-13-1-1) close the regular season at top-ranked Wisconsin on Feb. 18-19.
