Men's basketball | Around Ohio: Cooper’s 22 help Bobcats end skid
D.J. Cooper scored a season-high 22 points and Ohio University defeated Bowling Green 72-59 last night to snap a two-game losing streak and win its 20th game of the season.
The Bobcats (20-6, 8-4 Mid-American Conference), who won their seventh straight home game, reached 20 wins quicker than any team in school history, surpassing the 1994-95 squad (Feb. 22).
Trailing 55-52 with 6:11 to go, Ohio held Bowling Green to two free throws and a field goal the rest of the way.
Cooper scored 13 points in the final 5:32, starting with a three-pointer and a jumper to push the Bobcats ahead for good.
Jon Smith added nine points and nine rebounds, seven on the offensive end, as Ohio outrebounded Bowling Green 43-26.
Scott Thomas scored 17 points to lead the Falcons (13-12, 7-5).
Cincinnati 81, Providence 66 — Yancy Gates had 16 points and nine rebounds and Cincinnati (18-8, 8-5) dominated inside to beat Providence (13-14, 2-12) in the Big East.
The Bearcats repeatedly drove through the Friars’ half-court defense for layups. Sean Kilpatrick had 22 points for Cincinnati, which led by as many as 24 in the second half. The Bearcats sweated out a Friars surge that cut it to 66-59 with 4:22 to go.
Vincent Council led Providence with 29 points, 21 of them in the second half. LaDontae Henton added 24.
Akron 74, Miami 59 — Nikola Cvetinovic had all three of his steals in the first five minutes of the second half to help spark Akron (19-7, 11-1) past Miami University (8-16, 4-8) in the MAC.
With the scored tied at 33, the Zips opened the second half with a 13-2 run. Cvetinovic had the last of his three steals with 15:41 left and, after a Miami timeout, scored on a layup to put Akron ahead 46-35 with 15:26 to play.
Chauncey Gilliam paced Akron with 14 points, and Demetrius Treadwell chipped in 13 off the bench.
The Zips shot 51 percent from the field (25 of 49) and outrebounded the RedHawks 33-23.
Brian Sullivan of Upper Arlington scored 19 points for Miami. Julian Mavunga, averaging 17.1 points per game, was held to 11.
Toledo 63, Ball State 55 — Toledo (12-14, 4-8) made 12 of 17 three-pointers in beating Ball State (12-12, 4-8) in the MAC.
Curtis Dennis scored 17 points for the Rockets. Dominique Buckley scored 11 and Julius Brown 10.
Jesse Barry scored 17 for the Cardinals. Tyler Koch had 13 and Jarrod Jones 11 to go with 15 rebounds. Ball State had a 46-30 rebounding advantage.
Dayton 75, North Carolina-Charlotte 65 — Brookhaven grad Chris Johnson had 22 points and nine rebounds and Dayton (16-9, 6-5) used a big second half to beat North Carolina-Charlotte (12-12, 4-7) in the Atlantic 10.
The Flyers trailed 33-30 at halftime, but outscored the 49ers 45-32 in the second half.
Detroit 71, Wright State 55 — Jason Calliste scored 14 points and Detroit (16-12, 10-6) dominated inside in beating Wright State (12-16, 7-9) in the Horizon League.
The Titans posted a 35-22 rebounding advantage, including 11 on the offensive end, and outscored the Raiders 20-10 in the paint and 16-6 on second-chance points.
