Ohio State football: Another cornerbacks coach leaves
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer is in the hunt for a cornerbacks coach again.
Bill Sheridan, who had been on the job just over two weeks, yesterday asked for a release so he could “pursue other opportunities,” according to an OSU spokesman.
The other opportunity was confirmed last night when Sheridan was named defensive coordinator of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He interviewed for the job with new Tampa Bay and former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano this week.
When Meyer was named coach on Nov. 28, he retained Taver Johnson as cornerbacks coach. But in late January, Johnson was lured to Arkansas and joined his former OSU defensive backfield coaching partner Paul Haynes, who was hired in December to be defensive coordinator. To sweeten the pot, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino named Johnson assistant head coach and put him in charge of the linebackers.
Meyer brought in Sheridan, 53, in late January. He is a much-traveled college and pro assistant coach who, among many stops, spent four seasons at Michigan in the early 2000s and was defensive coordinator of the New York Giants in 2009. Sheridan was linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins the past two years.
