Ask the experts
Dispatch reporters and editors answer readers’ questions about Ohio State athletics at BuckeyeXtra.com:
Q: There hasn’t been much buzz about Jared Sullinger entering the NBA after his sophomore season. What do you think the chances are he stays in school for another season? — Jeff Franklin, San Clemente, Calif.
A: There hasn’t been much buzz because the presumption is he’s leaving. He told coach Thad Matta when he arrived that he planned to stay two years. I wonder, though, whether he would entertain thoughts of returning if he’s denied a national championship again. The head says go because the longer you stay, the more holes the NBA scouts find in his game. But does he follow his head or his heart? — Bob Baptist
Q: What is the status of former Buckeyes receiver Anthony Gonzalez? He got off to a pretty good start with Indianapolis but suffered two season-ending knee injuries. I think I saw him once in a game this season. Did he get injured again, and is he a free agent? — Roger Jordan, Brea, Calif.
A: Gonzalez has fallen victim to the injury bug, which in turn has sent his career into semi-storage. After beginning his career with a bang — 37 catches and three touchdowns in his rookie season (2007) and 57 catches and four touchdowns in 2008 — he lost his starting job as a slot receiver after a season-ending knee injury in the 2009 season opener. In 2010, Gonzalez had five catches in two games before a knee injury in week eight ended his season. His production diminished further this past season, when he had no receptions in eight games. He became an unrestricted free agent after the season. — Rob Oller
Q: Did former defensive coordinator Jim Heacock retire after being let go by Urban Meyer, or will he be coaching somewhere else? — Marc Martter, Huron
A: I have been in touch with Heacock from time to time in the interim, and he has had some opportunities he turned down. As he said, he doesn’t have to take a job just to have a job. He is looking for a good program and a good fit, and that will come, eventually, based on his body of work. And he is a fine, respected recruiter. Heacock was the major-college assistant coach of the year just four seasons ago. — Tim May
