Tigers cold from field in losing for second time to Wildcats this season

Rodney McGruder scored 24 points and Kansas State upset third-ranked Missouri 78-68 last night, the Wildcats’ second win over the Tigers this season.

Kansas State (19-8, 8-7 Big 12) led 40-30 at halftime and by 16 points in the second half before a late run by Missouri (25-3, 12-3) got the Tigers within 63-60.

Missouri trailed by four after two free throws by Michael Dixon with 2:21 left, but Jordan Henriquez answered with an alley-oop dunk. The Wildcats extended the lead on two free throws by Henriquez and built a cushion from the free-throw line in the final minute.

Thomas Gipson added 13 points for Kansas State, which connected on 53.8 percent of its field-goal attempts.

Dixon scored 21 and Marcus Denmon 19 for Missouri. The Tigers made only 38.3 percent of their shots after entering the game hitting more than 50 percent, tops in the Big 12 and third best in the nation.

Big Ten

No. 11 Michigan 67, Northwestern 55, OT — Trey Burke, Zack Novak and Stu Douglass hit three-pointers to start overtime and help Michigan (21-7, 11-4) fend off Northwestern (16-11, 6-9) in the Big Ten.

Burke, a Northland grad, scored 19 points to lead the Wolverines, who made 14 three-pointers and remain tied for second in the conference with Ohio State.

The Wildcats, whose chances of getting into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history were dealt another blow, got 14 points from John Shurna, six below his Big Ten-leading average.

Men’s highlights

No. 1 Kentucky 73, Mississippi State 64 — Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 18 points and Anthony Davis added 13 points and 11 rebounds to help Kentucky (27-1, 13-0) rally past Mississippi State (19-9, 6-7) in the Southeastern Conference.

The Wildcats trailed 41-28 at halftime, but slowly climbed back to take their first lead at 63-62 with 4:11 remaining on a layup by Kidd-Gilchrist. They never trailed again in winning their 19th straight game.

Kidd-Gilchrist scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half.

Dee Bost led Mississippi State with 21 points, and Arnett Moultrie added 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs have lost four straight games.

No. 7 North Carolina 86, North Carolina State 74 — Kendall Marshall had a career-high 22 points and 13 assists to help North Carolina (24-4, 11-2) beat North Carolina State (18-10, 7-6) for the 12th straight time in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Seton Hall 73, No. 9 Georgetown 55 — Jordan Theodore scored a career-high 29 points and Seton Hall (19-9, 8-8) upended Georgetown (20-6, 10-5) in the Big East.

The Pirates shot 61 percent (25 of 41), making them only the third team to shoot 50 percent or better against the Hoyas this season.

Miami 62, Kent State 60 — Julian Mavunga hit two free throws with three seconds left and Miami University (9-17, 5-8) held off a late surge by Kent State (19-8, 9-4) in the Mid-American Conference.

Wisconsin-Green Bay 71, Cleveland State 67 — Kam Cerroni scored 17 points and Wisconsin-Green Bay (13-14, 8-8) handed Cleveland State (20-9, 10-6) its fifth straight loss in the Horizon League.

Women’s highlights

No. 1 Baylor 80, Texas 59 — Brittney Griner had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Baylor (28-0, 15-0) claimed the outright Big 12 title with a win over Texas (15-12, 5-10).

Griner’s 40th career double-double came in her 100th game at Baylor.

No. 20 St. John’s 63, West Virginia 54 — Eastmoor Academy grad Ayana Dunning scored a career-high 21 points and had 16 rebounds, but West Virginia (19-8, 9-5) fell to St. John’s (19-8, 11-3) in the Big East.
