What's it say when not one person in a group of seven supposedly well-informed sports writers and editors can't crack the .500 mark in his weekly picks? Well, "we" would say that last weekend must have been a crazy one in college football. And with four of the top-10 teams losing, that would be true. "You" might say that our prognosticators just aren't that good. And that might be true, too.

Well, we would say that last weekend must have been a crazy one in college football. And with four of the top-10 teams losing, that would be true.

You might say that our prognosticators just aren't that good. And that also might be true.

Fun with numbers: Fans aren't the only ones who had high expectations of Ohio State's offense in the opening month of the season. Combining our panel's predictions from the Buckeyes' past four games, OSU was expected to win by an average score of 48-16. In reality, Ohio State won those games by an average tally of 32-13.

The takeaway? Nothing you don't already know. OSU's offense hasn't lived up to our (and your?) expectations. The defense has slightly exceeded them.

This week's picks (pickers listed alphabetically and certainly not in order of importance -- or expertise):

Rob Dewolf, BuckeyeXtra editor

Ohio State 52, Maryland 7:A wise handicapper once told me not to hold a winning horse's inferior competition against the horse; he can beat only who he runs against. Buckeyes fans shouldn't look this week's gift horse -- or gift turtles -- in the mouth. OSU is fortunate that its easy early season schedule provides ample time to work out the kinks.

Purdue over Minnesota
Oklahoma State over West Virginia

Indiana over Penn State
Michigan over Northwestern
Nebraska over Wisconsin
Iowa over Illinois
Minnesota over Purdue
West Virginia over Oklahoma State
Georgia over Tennessee
Florida over Missouri
Utah over California

Bill Rabinowitz, Dispatch beat writer

Ohio State 41, Maryland 6: The Buckeyes are going to put it together one of these weeks, right? If they can't overwhelm a flailing Terrapins team, Ohio State's problems run deeper than we think.

Northwestern over Michigan
Wisconsin over Nebraska
Iowa over Illinois
Minnesota over Purdue
West Virginia over Oklahoma State
Georgia over Tennessee
Florida over Missouri
Utah over California

Ray Stein, Dispatch sports editor

Ohio State 35, Maryland 7: The Buckeyes still play offense like it's a three-legged sack race, but at least they have the sense to not wear the sacks on their heads like the Terrapins.

Indiana over Penn State
Michigan over Northwestern
Nebraska over Wisconsin
Iowa over Illinois
Minnesota over Purdue
