The guest speaker at the January meeting of Dustman’s Deputies was Ron Smith, Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Regional Manager, covering four states. 

He spoke about railroad history, train accidents, safety issues on trains and railroad law enforcement. 

The December meeting was canceled. At the November meeting, the guest speaker was Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci. He talked about changes in his office due to retirement and promotion, and the Ohio governor appointing him to the Ohio Crimes Commission, along with the Stand Your Ground law, the Prison Compensation law and Marcy’s Law. 

Portage County Sheriff Dave Doak also spoke during the meeting. He talked about construction at the jail, inside and out, ongoing budget problems, shortages in dispatch, road patrol and the detective bureau, as well as states legalizing marijuana while it is still a federal offense. 

The next meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Feb. 19 at the Little City Grill, 802 N. Mantua St., Kent. The meeting is open to those with Portage County law enforcement or government experience and their family members.
