Mikael Torpegaard's bid to return to the NCAA tennis singles final began Wednesday when the Ohio State junior swept Thomas Laurent of Oregon in two sets in the first round of the national championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
Torpegaard, the top seed, won 7-5, 6-2, and will face Korey Lovett of Central Florida at 9 a.m. today in the second round.
The tournament run for Francesca Di Lorenzo of Ohio State, the women's No. 1 seed, ended early with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to No. 37 Mayar Sherif Ahmed of Pepperdine. Di Lorenzo (37-2) had won 21 consecutive matches and advanced to the round of 16 in last year's tournament.
In other singles matches, Ohio State's Hugo Di Feo lost to Emil Reinberg of Georgia, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, and JJ Wolf lost to William Blumberg of North Carolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
In women's doubles, Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase face Caroline Brinson and Ellen Perez of Georgia at 4:30 p.m. today. For the men, Di Feo and Martin Joyce play Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinki of Georgia at 2:30 p.m., and Herkko Pollanen and Torpegaard face Arkansas' Mike Redlicki and Jose Salazar at 4:30 p.m.
