Ohio State is easing out of training camp and beginning preparations in earnest for next Thursday’s season-opener at Indiana.

Coach Urban Meyer spoke shortly after the Associated Press preseason poll was released. The Buckeyes are ranked second behind Alabama. But as good as Meyer feels about his team, he was measured in his assessment of how good it is right now.

"I like our team,” he said. “I hate to be redundant -- my wife calls it coach-talk -- but I really like our older players.

"I don't think we have a great team, but I like where we're at."

Several position battles continue to be fought. Meyer said the right guard spot is still up for grabs, though he singled out Branden Bowen for praise.

At safety opposite Damon Webb, Meyer said that Jordan Fuller and Erick Smith are still fighting for the starting spot.

Veteran Sean Nuernberger, who missed last season with a groin injury, is ahead of freshman Blake Haubeil, but Meyer said the gap is narrow.

In other news, Meyer said that running back Mike Weber was full speed in practice Monday. He has been taking it slowly because of a hamstring injury.

Meyer said that captains would be announced Monday night.
