1. at Indiana

Essentials: 8 p.m. Thursday, Bloomington, Indiana (TV: ESPN)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 38-17 last season in Columbus; Ohio State leads series 73-12-5

The skinny: Since 1952, Woody Hayes’ second season as coach, Ohio State has lost only twice to Indiana — back-to-back defeats in 1987 and ’88 — with 53 wins and two ties. The Buckeyes have won 22 straight over IU, but OSU won the last two games in Bloomington by only a combined 10 points.

2. Oklahoma

Essentials: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, Ohio Stadium (TV: ABC)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 45-24 last season in Norman, Oklahoma; Ohio State leads series 2-1

The skinny: Oklahoma’s visit to Columbus will be its first in 40 years. On Sept. 24, 1977, the Buckeyes rallied from a 20-0 deficit to a 28-20 lead, but a Sooners touchdown and onside kick recovery led to Uwe von Schamann’s winning field goal from 41 yards out with three seconds remaining.

3. Army

Essentials: 4:30 p.m. Sept. 16, Ohio Stadium (TV: Fox)

Last meeting: First meeting

The skinny: The teams finished 1-2 in the final 1944 Associated Press poll. Both were 9-0 that season but Army claimed 95 of the writers’ 121 first-place votes to ease to the national title. The Black Knights beat No. 5 Notre Dame 59-0 and No. 2 Navy 23-7 that year. OSU is 5-1 against military academy teams.

Essentials: TBA Sept. 23, Ohio Stadium (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: First meeting

The skinny: Ohio State hasn’t played UNLV before, but the Buckeyes are 9-1 against current Mountain West Conference teams — the lone loss coming at the hands of Air Force in the 1990 Liberty Bowl. The game also will mark OSU’s first against a team from Nevada. The Buckeyes still have 12 states to cross off their list, the most prominent being Mississippi.

5. at Rutgers

Essentials: TBA Sept. 30, Piscataway, New Jersey (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 58-0 last season in Columbus; Ohio State leads series 3-0

The skinny: Since Rutgers entered the Big Ten, in 2014, Ohio State’s margin of victory over the Scarlet Knights has increased each year — from 39 points in 2014 (56-17) to 42 points (49-7) in 2015 to 58 last year. Rutgers’ schedule includes four teams — OSU, Washington, Penn State and Michigan — among the top 11 in the AP poll.

6. Maryland

Essentials: 3:30 or 4 p.m. Oct. 7, Ohio Stadium (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 62-3 last season in College Park, Maryland; Ohio State leads series 3-0

The skinny: Five teams on Maryland’s 2017 schedule are currently ranked in the preseason Associated Press poll, including No. 23 Texas in its opener and the second-ranked Buckeyes in October. This is not cause for celebration for the Terrapins, who haven’t beaten a ranked team since 2010, a span of 15 games.

7. at Nebraska

Essentials: TBA Oct. 14, Lincoln, Nebraska (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 62-3 last season in Columbus; Ohio State leads series 4-1

The skinny: Nebraska’s home schedule includes the three teams — Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin — that beat the Cornhuskers in the regular season a year ago. It will be the Buckeyes’ first game in Lincoln since Oct. 8, 2011, a 34-27 win for Nebraska in its first game as a Big Ten member.

8. Penn State

Essentials: 3:30 p.m. Oct. 28, Ohio Stadium (TV: Fox)

Last meeting: Penn State won 24-21 last season in State College, Pennsylvania; Ohio State leads series 18-14

The skinny: Ohio State and Penn State have played every year since 1993 as Big Ten members, but last year’s victory by the Nittany Lions over No. 2 OSU was only the third in that span in which the higher-ranked team did not win. The other “upsets” were 2009 (OSU 24-7 over Penn State) and 2005 (Penn State, 17-10).

9. Iowa

Essentials: TBA Nov. 4, Iowa City, Iowa (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 34-24 in 2013 in Columbus; Ohio State leads series 47-14-3

The skinny: The vagaries of Big Ten scheduling being what they are, this will mark the first time that Ohio State has played at Iowa since 2010, Jim Tressel’s last year. Under Urban Meyer, the Buckeyes have played Iowa only once — a 34-24 win in 2013. Meyer was 1-0 against the Hawkeyes as Florida coach.

10. Michigan State

Essentials: TBA Nov. 11, Ohio Stadium (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 17-16 last season in East Lansing, Michigan; Ohio State leads series 30-15

The skinny: No Big Ten team has been a thorn in Urban Meyer’s side like Michigan State. The teams have met in each of Meyer’s five seasons, with OSU winning three times in East Lansing — by scores of 17-16, 49-37 and 17-16. MSU has twice upset the Buckeyes, in the 2013 Big Ten championship game and in 2015 in Columbus.

11. Illinois

Essentials: TBA Nov. 18, Ohio Stadium (TV: TBA)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 28-3 in 2015 in Champaign, Illinois; Ohio State leads series 68-30-4

The skinny: The battle for the Illibuck trophy has had its share of streaks over the years. From 1968 to ’82, Ohio State won 15 in a row. The next 19 years were competitive, Illinois winning 10 of 19 games. Since 2002, however, Ohio State has captured 11 of 12 meetings, including eight in a row.

12. Michigan

Essentials: Noon Nov. 25, Ann Arbor, Michigan (TV: Fox)

Last meeting: Ohio State won 30-27 in two overtimes last season in Columbus; Michigan leads 58-49-6

The skinny: In the 81 years since the inception of the Associated Press football poll, Ohio State and Michigan have played only nine times when neither team was ranked. Eleven times, both teams have been ranked in the top five, including No. 2 OSU’s squeaker over the No. 3 Wolverines last year.
