One of the best annual features in all of college basketball has again drawn some praise for Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann.

Over at CBS, college basketball writers Gary Parrish, Matt Norlander and Reid Forgrave put together a series each summer called “Candid Coaches.” While out on the recruiting trail during the summer, the three poll coaches from all levels of the sport on a number of topics ranging from the best team in the upcoming season to reactions on Lavarr Ball.

It’s always entertaining stuff, and today’s installment is especially Big Ten-centric with the topic, “Which power-conference school made the best coaching hire?”

For some Ohio State fans, the results are galling. Archie Miller, who went from Dayton to Indiana, was the top answer with 37.8 percent of the results. Next up was Brad Underwood, who went from Oklahoma State to Illinois, at 26.4 percent.

Then, in a tie for third sits Holtmann, who alongside Missouri’s Cuonzo Martin received 10.4 percent of the results. In all, seven coaches received multiple votes. You can (and should) read the whole thing by clicking here.

The column, penned by Parrish, features three responses from other coaches on Holtmann. Among them:

“I've known him a long time and competed against him when he was at Gardner-Webb. I think he's got the makeup for it. Reserved, works his face off, does it the right way, treats people well, and he can coach his ass off.”

“I think he did a great job at Butler. His teams always play with great toughness, and that will translate well in the Big Ten. I don't know him at all other than watching his teams play, and how they competed. The way they compete will translate well.”

Holtmann’s name also appeared on a list last week asking which high-major coaches don’t break the rules. That was topped by Michigan’s John Beilein at 26.6 percent, but Holtmann was tied for sixth at 4.8 percent. The others that got the same number of votes: Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and Kansas State’s Bruce Weber.
