Analysis: Enough of the silliness
Ohio State finally asserted itself in the third quarter – imposing its will on defense and warming to the task on offense, albeit without immediate results. Indiana started with the ball first and went three-and-out. OSU took over and used a 24-yard run by J.K. Dobbins to move into Indiana territory. On third-and-2 from the 41, J.T. Barrett lofted a perfect deep ball to a streaking Parris Campbell, who flat dropped it in the end zone. The Buckeyes were then stuffed on fourth down. No worries. Ohio State forced another three-and-out and then embarked on an 85-yard scoring drive, the big play a 28-yard pass from Barrett to Campbell on third down. Dobbins later converted on fourth-and-1 and, after an interference call on Indiana, Barrett scored over left tackle for a 20-14 lead. Indiana, though, came right back to regain the lead, after a funky call in which an apparent OSU touchdown on a Robert Landers fumble return was overruled by video. Richard Lagow again found success throwing the ball at will, hitting Ian Thomas with a 2-yard scoring pass to restore Indiana’s lead to 21-20 at the 4:56 mark. It didn’t last long. On OSU’s next play, Barrett threw short to a crossing Campbell, who cut upfield and got a downfield block from Terry McLaurin to spring him to the end zone. After another three-and-out by the defense, the Buckeyes hit another big pass play, this one a 59-yard catch-and-run score from Barrett to Johnnie Dixon. When Barrett ran in a two-point conversion to make the score 35-21, it looked like Ohio State was firmly in control. – Ray Stein
