On a Periscope feed with hundreds watching Friday night, East Central High School (San Antonio) Class of 2018 forward NaLyssa Smith thanked her teammates, family, friends, coaches and the coaches who recruited her.
One by one, she removed t-shirts representing her four finalists: Louisville, Baylor, South Carolina and Ohio State, which revealed a black t-shirt that read “loading.”
Suspense properly built up, she revealed one final t-shirt with her choice: Baylor.
“It was a close decision,” Smith said. “We were in the room thinking about this all night.”
Smith, the No. 7 player in the ESPN HoopGurlz Class of 2018 Super 60, averaged a double-double in each of her last two seasons at East Central High School in San Antonio. As a junior last season, the forward averaged 23 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks.
Smith took her first official visit to South Carolina in April and wrapped up her recruitment earlier this month with official visits to Ohio State, Louisville and, most recently, Baylor.
Earlier this week, Smith told The Dispatch her decision was “like the flip of a coin.” She said she liked the proximity of Baylor, as well as the program’s style of play and incoming recruiting class.
Ohio State does not yet have a Class of 2018 commit, but is in the running for several Class of 2018 Super 60 recruits.
