Analysis: Some good, some not

Ohio State began its game at its personal East Coast playground with a mixed-bag performance. The Buckeyes owned a big advantage in total yards after the first quarter (144 to 51) but had only the one touchdown to show for it, a 1-yard plunge by Mike Weber on OSU’s second possession. Penalties hampered Ohio State throughout the quarter; it committed five, for 31 yards, and had another declined by Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights committed four of their own, including a pass interference call on safety Kiy Hester that gave the Buckeyes 15 key red-zone yards on their scoring drive. That call, one play after OSU’s J.T. Barrett rambled 37 yards, gave Ohio State a first down at the Rutgers 8. Weber ran 7 yards on first down, then broke the plane for a touchdown on the next play. Rutgers punted on its next drive, pinning the Buckeyes deep in their territory. OSU was forced to punt, and Drue Chrisman’s kick went only 26 yards, to the OSU 33. But Rutgers was called for an illegal block on the punt and the drive eventually stalled when freshman quarterback Johnathan Lewis was intercepted by Ohio State’s Dante Booker at the OSU 13. A 34-yard run by J.K. Dobbins and a 20-yard pass from Barrett to Parris Campbell had the Buckeyes on the move again as the quarter ended. – Ray Stein
