Star of the game

J.T. Barrett took his final, soggy Ohio Stadium bow — actually, he took it twice, going back in after a fumble by backup Dwayne Haskins Jr. led to an Illinois score in the third quarter. Barrett was 11-of-19 passing for 141 yards, his two touchdown passes pushing his career mark to 101, and he ran for another TD.

Turning point

The Buckeyes jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first 7:01, and then, with the defense holding sway, lowered the boom on their third possession. That’s when Mike Weber ran through a huge hole and then an attempted tackle on a 43-yard touchdown run at 5:08 of the first quarter.

Ohio State won impressively, as expected, to keep the attention of the College Football Playoff selection committee. The Buckeyes clinched the Big Ten East slot in the league title game Dec. 2 after Wisconsin beat Michigan. But first comes The Game. Coach Urban Meyer won’t let them forget.
