Senior Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger won a national championship in the men’s epee and led Ohio State to a third-place finish in the NCAA fencing championships in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.
Notre Dame won the team title with 185 points, followed by Columbia (170) and Ohio State (147).
In the finals, Blais Belanger defeated Sean White of St. John’s 10-9. The bout went into overtime with each fencer earning seven touches in the first two periods. With three seconds left, Blais Belanger took a one-touch lead to earn the title.
Blais Belanger finished the first five rounds in fourth place. He defeated No. 1-ranked Ariel Simmons of Notre Dame 15-14 in the semifinals.
Domenik Koch of Ohio State finished third in men's saber.
Three OSU women had sixth-place finishes: Sarah Merza in the saber, Camilla Rivano in the foil and Emma von Dadelszen in the epee.
