The uncertainty surrounding coach Urban Meyer’s status seems to have had an effect on Ohio State’s ranking in the Associated Press preseason football poll released Monday, as the Buckeyes will start the season ranked No. 5.
Ohio State is ranked No. 3 in the Amway coaches poll. That poll was released before Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into his response to allegations of domestic abuse by former assistant Zach Smith. Meyer remains in limbo, with a decision on his status expected this week.
Defending champion Alabama is ranked No. 1 with 42 out of 61 first-place votes, followed by Clemson, Georgia and Wisconsin.
Ohio State defeated undefeated Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game last year.
Three other Big Ten schools are ranked, all in the top 15. Penn State is No. 10, Michigan State 11th and Michigan 14th.
In another poll released Monday, Ohio State is ranked sixth by the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Wisconsin and Washington are the top five in that poll.
