Former Ohio State basketball star D'Angelo Russell received a citation Wednesday after being accused of hiding marijuana in a can of iced tea while traveling through LaGuardia Airport in New York.

A spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Russell was given a summons for possessing less than 50 grams of marijuana and was released from custody.

Russell, who plays for the Brooklyn Nets, was reported to be flying to his hometown of Louisville at the time he was stopped by TSA personnel.

A routine search of his luggage revealed a can of Arizona Iced Tea in a bag Russell had checked. Further inspection of the modified can revealed a hidden compartment where the marijuana was discovered.

Russell played for Ohio State during the 2014-15 season, earning first-team All-Big Ten and Big Ten freshman of the year honors.

The Nets said Thursday they were aware of the situation and gathering additional information. Russell has not commented publicly on the situation.

The citation Russell received is punishable under New York law with a $100 fine.
