Seventh-seeded Ohio State advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten baseball tournament by holding off Maryland 3-2 on Friday in the completion of a suspended game from Thursday night in Omaha, Nebraska.

Closer Andrew Magno got the final five outs for the Buckeyes (33-24).

Ohio State will play Saturday against the winner of Friday night's game between Iowa and Minnesota.

Zach Dezenzo's sacrifice fly gave Ohio State a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on Thursday. Maryland (29-28) got a runner to second in the bottom of the inning before weather forced play to be suspended.

Magno relieved starter Griffan Smith (6-4) and struck out back-to-back batters when the game resumed. He struck out four hitters and induced a game-ending fly ball for his 12th save of the season.

Smith pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

Dominic Canzone walked three times and scored twice for Ohio State. He was hit by a pitch to open the game and scored on a two-out single by Brady Cherry.

Canzone scored in the third after he walked and came home on a two-base error.

Maryland tied it at 2-2 when Big Ten Freshman of the Year Maxwell Costes launched a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the third.

 

Men's golf

Daniel Wetterich shot a 1-under-par 71 and Will Grimmer fired a 72 to lead Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Wetterich is tied for sixth place and Grimmer is tied for 12th.

Ohio State is in seventh place at 9-over 297 at Blessings Golf Club. Oklahoma State leads at 290. 

Caleb Ramirez, Will Voetsch and Laken Hinton each shot 77 for the Buckeyes.

 

Track and field

Nick Gray of Ohio State was second in the first round of the men's 200 meters in 20.32 seconds in the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet in Jacksonville, Florida.

Tyler Johnson was fifth in a quarterfinal of the men's 400 in 45.79.
