The season opened with a question of which junior would carry the Buckeyes at quarterback: starter Justin Zwick or backup Troy Smith — yes, eventual Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. Both played and had passing touchdowns, but Zwick also threw two interceptions and fumbled. Going into openers, not everything is evident. But the strength of Ohio State's defense certainly was, partly because it had been built by Cincinnati's Mark Dantonio, the former Buckeyes defensive coordinator in his first game as a head coach. Dantonio had future success against the Buckeyes at Michigan State, but found none on this day.
