Ohio State 77, Oregon State 31
Sept. 1, 2018
Ohio State fans — and most likely the players, too — couldn't wait for the season to begin after a month of revelations and allegations tied to the firing of an assistant coach, his relationship with his ex-wife, dirty-laundry details and, hovering above it all, how much coach Urban Meyer knew, and when. A return to football is a return to normalcy, right? Well, no. Ohio State suspended Meyer for three games for his handling of the matter and temporarily placed in charge a person who had never been a head coach before, offensive coordinator Ryan Day. On the field, a reeling Oregon State program was no match of the Buckeyes, with new starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. passing for five touchdowns and Mike Weber rushing for three. Meyer returned from his suspension and the Buckeyes rolled to an 11-1 regular-season record, but when stress-related health issues flared up for Meyer, he decided it was time to retire. Haskins left, too, for the NFL. And Day was given the reins of the program for good.
