Ohio State defensive end Chase Young has been named the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which goes to the top defensive player in college football.

Young received the honor while at an awards dinner at the touchdown club in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday night.

The last Ohio State player to win the award was former linebacker James Laurinaitis in 2006.

A committee of voters from the Football Writers Association of America selects the winner for the Nagurski Trophy, which was first awarded in 1993.

Laurinaitis was the Buckeyes’ first player to win the award.

Young had 16.5 sacks in the regular season to lead the Football Bowl Subdivision and is a finalist for other awards that will be announced later this week, including the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player and the Maxwell Award as the top overall player. The winners will be revealed at the Home Depot College Football Awards in Atlanta on Thursday.

Other finalists for the Nagurski Award were Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown, Georgia safety J.R. Reed, Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons and Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr.

Winfield is the son of Antoine Winfield Sr., who was an All-American cornerback at Ohio State before playing a decade in the NFL.
