Ohio State lost a member of its 2021 recruiting class when Cincinnati cornerback Devonta Smith announced he had decommitted.

"I would like to announce that I will be reopening my recruitment," Smith wrote Thursday afternoon on Twitter. "My family and I have chosen to weigh our options and make sure I’m making the best decision for my future."

Smith thanked Ohio State coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs, who was his lead recruiter. He said his time as an Ohio State recruit has been "nothing but love and something I will never forget."

Rumors swirled earlier in the day that Smith would flip to Alabama. Several recruiting analysts predicted that move in their forecasts.

Smith is a three-star recruit ranked 400th overall nationally by 247sports.com. He was the lowest-rated recruit in Ohio State’s top-ranked 2021 class except for Australian punter Jesse Mirco. He committed to Ohio State on March 16.

Smith’s departure leaves 18 players in the Buckeyes’ 2021 recruiting class.
