Star of the game

Although Mike Weber gave it a mighty run with his 186-yard, three-touchdown performance, Dwayne Haskins Jr. ruled the day. The sophomore had the best first-time starting-quarterback stats for Ohio State, with 313 yards passing and five touchdown passes.

Turning point

Weber’s back-to-back touchdowns in the first half of the second quarter. He burst 49 yards for the first one, through a lane cleared in part by Luke Farrell and Binjimen Victor, then five minutes later caught a 3-yard TD pass from Haskins to increase Ohio State’s lead to 35-7.

Repercussions

The Buckeyes went in No. 5 in The Associated Press preseason poll and beat the spread and then some. With the exception of three big TD plays by Oregon State, the concentration was there under acting head coach Ryan Day, and suspended coach Urban Meyer gets back on board Monday.
