Star of the game

Drue Chrisman went from shanking his first punt 4 yards downfield and seven rows into the stands to plopping five that were downed inside the Michigan State 6-yard line, with assists from ball-downing friends Terry McLaurin and Johnnie Dixon.

Turning point

With Ohio State leading 9-6 in the fourth quarter, Dixon downed a Chrisman punt at the 1. On the next play, confusion in the MSU backfield on the snap led to a fumble that was pounced on in the end zone by defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones. OSU leaped to a 16-6 lead.

Only special teams historians and perhaps defensive-minded folks will look at this victory as anything more than the muddle it was. Maybe the playoff committee will notice, though, that winning in frigid conditions on the road in November, over a 3½-point underdog, showed, uh, gumption.
