Ohio State got the first commitment for its 2021 recruiting class on Sunday when five-star defensive tackle Jack Sawyer of Pickerington North announced he would become a Buckeye.
“This whole recruiting process has been a great experience and I’ve met some amazing people along the way,” Sawyer wrote on Twitter. “With that being said, I’ve talked with my family and decided I have to do what’s best for me and my future. That’s why I’ll be committing to THE Ohio State University!!”
Sawyer, a 6-foot-5, 219-pound sophomore, is the No. 3 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247sports.com composite rankings.

He is the second five-star defensive end from central Ohio to commit to the Buckeyes recently. In contrast to Olentangy Orange’s Zach Harrison, who kept everyone in the dark until signing with in December, Sawyer chose to end any suspense early.
Ohio State will round out its 2019 recruiting class on the traditional, if now anticlimactic, signing day on Wednesday. The Buckeyes hope to add a couple of offensive linemen.
Most of the coaching staff’s attention has been on what looks like a banner 2020 class. And now Sawyer has started the 2021 cycle with a bang.
Assuming Sawyer maintains his commitment, he’ll join another Pickerington North product with the Buckeyes. Defensive end Alex Williams signed with Ohio State last year and redshirted during the 2018 season.
