Joe Royer, a three-star tight end from Elder High in Cincinnati, announced Tuesday evening he had committed to Ohio State.

Royer became the first tight end prospect to join the Buckeyes’ recruiting class for 2020.

“I’m staying home, Committed‼️ #GoBucks” Royer tweeted.

With Royer's announcement, the Buckeyes have garnered 16 verbal commits for their next recruiting class. Nearly half have arrived in the past month, with seven announced since early June.

Royer is the second recruit from Elder High in the recruiting class, joining offensive tackle Jakob James who committed in January. Five commits are from Cincinnati, including Paris Johnson, the offensive tackle who is considered the top overall prospect in the class.

Ohio State’s coaches first extended Royer a scholarship offer last month, he said.

Royer is a lanky pass catcher, listed at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds on his hudl page.

While the Buckeyes will enter next season with five scholarship tight ends, three of them are upperclassmen, including fifth-year senior Rashod Berry, as well as fourth-year juniors Luke Farrell and Jake Hausmann.
