Four-star Arizona defensive back commits to play football for Ohio State

Ohio State has gone to opposite corners of the country to add defensive backs in its next class of recruits.

The trend continued Tuesday.

Lathan Ransom, a four-star safety from Tucson, Arizona, committed to the Buckeyes. He is rated as the nation's fourth-best safety recruit for the 2020 class, according to the composite rankings compiled by 247Sports.

Ransom revealed his decision in a video posted to social media.

“For the next four years, I would like to represent the Ohio State Buckeyes,” he said to end the nearly two-minute video.

He picked Ohio State over other LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Texas.

As a junior last season at Salpointe Catholic, the 6-foot-1 safety finished with 68 tackles and intercepted six passes, the Arizona Daily Star reported. He also caught 23 passes for 509 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned punts.

The two other defensive backs who have committed are Clark Phillips III, a cornerback from La Habra in Southern California and Lejond Cavazos from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Though listed as a safety prospect by 247Sports, Cavazos could also play cornerback.

Cameron Martinez, a quarterback from Muskego, Michigan, who committed to Ohio State earlier this month, will also play in the secondary or at receiver for the Buckeyes.

Ransom’s commitment was the latest development in a flurry of activity this summer. Since Memorial Day, 13 seniors have announced their commitments to Ohio State, making up more than half of its 2020 class.

Nine of the Buckeyes’ commits, including Ransom, are top-100 recruits, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. After his announcement, the class rose to second in the national rankings, ahead of Alabama and LSU, and trailing only Clemson five months before the early signing period.
