Luke Fickell was given a one-year contract to see if he was the person to coach the Buckeyes, and in the opener, little seemed different. Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller combined for 293 yards passing and four touchdowns, and the defense limited Akron to 90 yards total offense. The only complaint, such as it was, was the heat, with temperatures reaching 93 degrees. But the good feelings didn't last, with the Buckeyes losing six regular-season games, all but one by seven points or fewer. A 1-3 record in November that included Ohio State's first loss to Michigan since 2003, combined with some recruiting struggles, prompted the Buckeyes to look elsewhere for a coach.
