Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24

Sept. 7, 2015

Usually it's a boon when a national champion can return its starting quarterback. Ohio State returned three. Cardale Jones, the 2014 postseason hero, took the first snap, but the Buckeyes were trailing Virginia Tech 17-14 at halftime. Braxton Miller, the 2013 starter coming off injury, slid over to hybrid back and scored two second-half touchdowns, on a pass from Jones on a 53-yard run. Then in the fourth quarter, 2014 regular-season starter J.T. Barrett delivered his only pass of the game, 26 yards to Michael Thomas for a touchdown. Finding the best mix for its many stars was a challenge Ohio State struggled with all season, and not just at quarterback. Afterward, Miller and Jones departed, leaving the offense in Barrett's hands.
