Ohio State-Florida Atlantic | Rob Oller’s second thoughts

Rob Oller

• Is J.K. Dobbins the answer? Is the offensive line up to snuff? One game in, and the concern already is real. Coming out of last season, much was made of the drop-off in Dobbins’ yards per carry average — from 7.2 in 2017 to 4.6 last season. Against FAU, not known for having a lock-tight run defense, the junior averaged 4.3 yards per attempt, finishing with 91 yards on 21 carries. Dobbins ran hard, which makes me wonder about the line? Again, it’s early. O-lines need to gel. But not become jelly. Keep an eye on this one.

• What in the Wide World of Shotgun football were we watching? An Ohio State quarterback going under center, instead of taking the snap from 3 yards behind the center? Tis true. Coach Ryan Day said all spring and into preseason camp that the Buckeyes would go under center at times, which never happened in the seven seasons under Urban Meyer. I just didn’t think it would happen the equivalent of an entire series. It was old-school offense from Day, who is more as a cutting-edge play-caller. Nice to see.

• I liked the disc jockey. There, I said it. The worry among some was that the on-site deejay would take some steam from TBDBITL and thereby ruin the stadium experience. Bah. The band did its usually stellar groove thang and the record spinner did his. I especially enjoyed “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire. So sue me. It’s nice not to be that “Get off my lawn” guy for a change. Now, how about some Kool and the Gang? Send me a playlist and I’ll pass it along to the proper authorities. Please, no Seals & Crofts. I have my limits.
