Taking a look back at a game Ohio State played on this date:

Setup: Hard as it may be to believe, history suggests that almost every Ohio State coach will have a three-game losing streak. Urban Meyer was the exception in avoiding it in his seven seasons. Working backward, Luke Fickell (2011), Jim Tressel (2004), John Cooper (1988, ’99) and Earle Bruce (1982, ’87) all had at least one. Woody Hayes had two in-season three-game skids in his 28-year career, the first in 1966. A lopsided home loss to Washington began the stretch of stench.

Stars: Halfback Don Moore punished the Buckeyes for 221 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns as the Huskies churned out 413 yards on the ground, a figure that still stands as the second-most by an OSU opponent. Ohio State, meanwhile, managed only a meager 34 yards rushing. The Buckeyes attempted 37 passes, and Billy Anders tied a school record with 12 receptions, for 162 yards.

Turning point: Moore had two 21-yard runs on Washington’s emphatic 71-yard touchdown drive to open the game, and the Huskies scored on their first two drives of the second quarter for a 21-0 lead. The Buckeyes closed to 21-7 by halftime, but Bill Long was intercepted on OSU’s second play of the third quarter to set up Moore’s back-breaking TD run.

Impact: Ohio State was much more competitive the next two weeks, but a 10-9 loss at Illinois and an 11-8 defeat to No. 1 Michigan State still added up to a three-game losing streak. The Buckeyes finished the season 4-5, one of OSU’s two losing seasons under Hayes.
