Ohio State men's basketball: Buckeyes lose out as Zeb Jackson commits to Michigan

Zeb Jackson, a four-star guard prospect in the class of 2020, has announced his commitment to Michigan.

The 6-foot-2, 160-pound point guard from Maumee Valley Country Day in Toledo posted the news to his Instagram page Tuesday night after having taken a visit to Ann Arbor last weekend.

The Buckeyes had made his list of seven finalists, putting them in the same company as Arizona State, Butler, Marquette, Michigan State and Purdue.

In late September, Jackson told The Dispatch that he was planning to make a decision soon but hadn’t set a date. He took an official visit to Marquette during the weekend of Oct. 5 and had others still planned for Arizona State and Michigan State.

Jackson made unofficial visits to Ohio State on numerous occasions. At one point, after having taken unofficial visits to Purdue and Butler during the same weekend in mid-August, Jackson seemed set to commit to one of the two schools but ultimately reconsidered.

The composite rankings have Jackson as the No. 66 overall prospect in the country, the No. 18 shooting guard and the No. 2 overall prospect from Ohio. He is Michigan’s first commitment for the class of 2020.

Ohio State has a three-man class locked up for 2019, including five-star guard D.J. Carton from Bettendorf, Iowa, but no commitments for 2020. It’s not clear if the Buckeyes are planning to take a guard in the 2020 class but they are prioritizing adding another wing player and perhaps a rim protector.

They have offered Ohio’s top prospect in the class, 7-foot four-star center Zach Loveday from Gallipolis Gallia Academy.

They have also offered three-star guard prospect Dom Penn, a 6-foot, 155-pound point guard from Dublin Coffman who most recently added an offer from Akron. His father, Scoonie, is a member of Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann’s support staff and one of the program’s all-time great players.
