Ohio State men's basketball next schedule challenge: North Carolina
When discussing the unreleased 2019-20 schedule Wednesday afternoon, Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann wryly observed that the Buckeyes might as well schedule the Golden State Warriors for their exhibition game given how challenging it was shaping up to be.
The latest marquee opponent landed Thursday, when the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge matchups were announced. This year, Ohio State will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to face the Tar Heels for a true road game against what is projected to be a top-10 team.
North Carolina now joins a non-conference schedule that also includes Kentucky, Villanova, Cincinnati and West Virginia. Both Wildcats teams are also projected to be top-10 teams.
“We’ll talk more about the schedule down the road, but it’s a monster,” Holtmann said Wednesday without knowing the Buckeyes would face North Carolina.
Ohio State opens the regular season by hosting Cincinnati on the first day of the season, which has not yet been officially announced. The Buckeyes will host Villanova as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Nov. 13. The Kentucky game, which is part of the CBSSports Classic, will be played in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena on Dec. 21.
Eight days later, the Buckeyes will then face West Virginia and coach Bob Huggins in Cleveland at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, home of the NBA’s Cavaliers, on Dec. 29.
Ohio State is 7-11 overall in the history of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and has lost five straight games. Its last win came at home against Maryland, now a conference foe, on Dec. 4, 2013. This will be the first road game for the Buckeyes in the Challenge since a 63-61 loss at Virginia on Nov. 30, 2016.
The ACC leads the all-time series, 10-5-3. Last year, the leagues went 7-7 against each other. Overall, the ACC has a 127-98 record against the Big Ten in the Challenge.
