OSU men's hockey rolls past Spartans

Ohio State overwhelmed Michigan State in men's hockey with a 5-1 win Friday night at Value City Arena.

Ohio State (20-8-5, 13-6-4-3 Big Ten) scored first on Eugene Fadyeyev’s first goal of the season 7:18 into the first period. Michigan State (11-17-5, 7-12-4-2 Big Ten) answered 1:21 into the second period on a goal from Tommy Apap.

Later in the second, Ohio State responded by scoring twice in under three minutes. Matt Miller scored 13:48 into the second before Freddy Gerard found the back of the net 16:32 of the second period. The Buckeyes tacked on two scores early in the third period on goals from Ronnie Hein (1:51) and John Wiitala (5:31).

Ohio State, which already clinched the Big Ten title, outshot Michigan State 32-22. OSU goaltender Tommy Nappier had 21 saves, and Spartans goalie Drew DeRidder had 27.

Women’s hockey

Emma Maltais’ go-ahead goal 28 seconds into the first overtime period gave Ohio State a 3-2 victory over Minnesota State in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament at the OSU Ice Rink. The win gives the Buckeyes a 1-0 advantage in the three-game series.

Ohio State struck first on a Tatum Skaggs’ goal 5:18 into the first period. Minnesota State’s Brooke Bryant responded on a power-play opportunity 14:19 into the first before OSU’s Lisa Bruno gave the Buckeyes the lead again with a minute left in the period. Bryant scored the equalizer 1:26 into the third.

The Buckeyes riddled the net with 42 shots, and Minnesota State had 21. OSU goalie Andrea Braendli had 19 saves. Mavericks goalie Abigail Levy had 39.

Men’s swimming

Ohio State sits in third place with 823 points after the third day of the Big Ten men’s swimming and diving championships on Friday in Iowa City, Iowa. Indiana leads the field with 1,144 points, and Michigan has 1,026.

Three Buckeye individuals medaled. Noah Lense took third in the 400-yard IM. Paul DeLakis and Henriq Painhas took second in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, respectively. The 200-yard freestyle relay team also took second place.

Women’s lacrosse

Liza Hernandez and Ali Beekhuizen scored three goals apiece to give Ohio State (4-1) an 11-9 win over Marquette (3-3). Bailey Parrot added two goals, while Sara Dickinson, Sophie Baez, Chloe Johnson each tacked on one goal.
