Ohio State’s NCAA tennis championships ended earlier than the Buckeyes expected.
No. 2 seed JJ Wolf, the final Buckeye alive in the tournament, lost in the Round of 16 on Thursday, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Florida freshman Sam Riffice in Orlando, Fla.
It capped a disappointing week for the Buckeyes. They were the No. 1 seed in the men’s team tournament but lost to North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
Ohio State hoped to bounce back in the singles and doubles tournaments, with Wolf leading the way. The junior from Cincinnati survived a three-setter in his second-round match on Tuesday but couldn’t do it again.
Wolf overcame an early service break to take the first set but dropped the second set and was broken twice in the third, the second time to fall behind 5-2. Riffice dropped only one point in his clinching service game.
Wolf had lost only one match all season, which came in the Big Ten semifinals.
Previously, John McNally lost in the first round, and Kyle Seelig lost in the second round. The doubles team of Hunter Tubert and Martin Joyce lost in the first round, as did Isabelle Boulais in the women’s singles.
