Ohio State football makes preseason Associated Press poll despite canceled fall season

Though it will not play a football season in 2020, Ohio State still cracked the Associated Press preseason top-25 poll.

The Buckeyes were ranked No. 2 when the poll was released Monday, trailing only Clemson, which was similarly atop the preseason coaches’ poll unveiled earlier this month.

They received 21 first-place votes, while the Tigers garnered 38. Only 16 points separated the teams, which were national championship favorites.

The AP had asked voters to consider ranking all teams, even those who had canceled their fall seasons, though teams not playing will not be included in the in-season polls.

Michael Giarrusso, the AP’s global sports editor, said they wanted to give college football fans a “snapshot” of the national landscape prior to recent cancelations.

Over this month, four of the 10 conferences in the top-tier Football Bowl Subdivision scrapped their seasons for the fall, including the Big Ten, Mid-American, Mountain West and Pac-12. Three FBS independents, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Mexico State, will also not play in the coming months.

Nine of the ranked teams were those not playing, with six from the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes have been ranked in the AP’s preseason poll each August since 1988, a streak of 32 consecutive appearances that is the longest active streak in the country.

OSU has also been ranked in the longstanding national poll in each season since 1967.

Following Clemson and Ohio State, the rest of the top-10 was rounded out by Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Louisiana State, Penn State, Florida, Oregon and Notre Dame.
