Ohio State defensive lineman Haskell Garrett was hospitalized after suffering a gunshot wound to his face in the university district early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Columbus police responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of Chittenden Avenue about 12:30 a.m.

Garrett, 22, was found in an apartment with a gunshot wound through both cheeks, police said. Blood and a gun shell were seen in the street, and a trail of blood led to the apartment, which is located about a half-mile away from the scene.

He was taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in stable condition.

Information concerning a possible suspect and motive was not included in a media release.

Further details were not expected to be released Sunday. Sgt. James Fuqua, a police spokesman, said detectives were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Garrett is a senior for the Buckeyes and was projected to be a starting defensive tackle this fall before the season was canceled by the Big Ten Conference due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Ohio State’s players remain enrolled in fall semester classes, which began last week at the university, and are living near campus for workouts at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and other athletics facilities.

A product of Bishop Gorman High School, Garrett enrolled at OSU in 2017, alongside hyped quarterback recruit Tate Martell, who was his teammate at the powerhouse prep program in Las Vegas. Martell transferred to Miami shortly after Justin Fields joined the program in early 2018.

Last season, Garrett totaled 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss while appearing in 10 games for the Buckeyes. On the team’s depth chart, he was listed as the backup at defensive tackle behind Jashon Cornell, who was a senior.

He also played in 14 games as a sophomore in 2018 and had seven tackles.
